How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and other AI search tools
More people now ask an AI assistant which agency, dentist or software to choose. You can't buy your way into those answers, but you can make your business much easier for them to find and trust.

Ask ChatGPT for the best bakery near a railway station, or the right CRM for a ten-person sales team, and you get a short list with reasons. No ten blue links, no ads at the top. For the businesses on that list it is free, highly qualified attention. For everyone else it is invisible lost business.
There is no secret switch that puts you in those answers, and anyone selling a guaranteed ChatGPT ranking is guessing. What we can say with confidence is how these tools gather information, and that tells you what to work on.
How AI assistants decide what to say about you
Assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews draw on two sources:
- What they learned during training. A snapshot of the public web, which can be months or years old.
- What they look up live. When an answer needs fresh or local information, many of them search the web, read a handful of pages and summarise them.
The second part is where most businesses can make a difference quickly. If the assistant searches, finds clear and consistent information about you on your own site and on sites it trusts, you have a real chance of being mentioned. If your site is slow, blocks crawlers or never says plainly what you do and where, you probably will not be.
Step 1: Let the AI crawlers in
Check your robots.txt file. Some security plugins and hosting templates block bots broadly, including the ones AI search tools use, such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot and Googlebot. Blocking training crawlers is a reasonable business choice; blocking the search crawlers means the assistant cannot read your pages when someone asks about you.
It is also worth verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console. Several AI products lean on Bing's index for live results, and many small businesses have never submitted a sitemap there.
Step 2: Say plainly who you are, what you do and where
AI models summarise. They do much better with a sentence like “We are a family-run dental clinic in Malviya Nagar, Jaipur, offering implants, aligners and emergency appointments” than with “Smiles that inspire confidence.” Put a plain description near the top of your home page and your About page. Use the same business name, address and phone number everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
Add structured data (schema markup) for your organisation or local business, your products or services, and FAQs. It does not guarantee anything, but it removes ambiguity about facts like opening hours, prices and locations.
Step 3: Answer the questions people actually ask
People talk to assistants in full questions: “Which accounting software works for a small export business in India?” Pages that answer a specific question directly, then explain the detail, are easy to quote. A good pattern:
- A heading that matches the question.
- A two or three sentence answer straight underneath.
- The detail, examples and exceptions after that.
- Real specifics: prices or price ranges, timelines, who it is not right for.
Finding those questions is ordinary keyword research. Search suggestions and “People also ask” boxes are a good source; we explain a free method in keyword research without expensive tools.
Step 4: Get mentioned on sites the AI already trusts
When an assistant searches “best project management tool for agencies”, it often reads review sites, comparison articles, forums and news. Being mentioned there matters as much as your own pages. Practical ways in:
- Ask happy customers for reviews on Google and the review sites that matter in your industry.
- Contribute genuinely useful answers in communities where your customers ask questions.
- Pitch data or expertise to industry publications instead of generic guest posts.
- Keep your listings in relevant directories complete and current.
Step 5: Keep classic SEO healthy
Google's AI Overviews are built on Google search. Pages that are fast, well structured, indexed and ranking on page one are far more likely to be used as sources. If your pages sit on page two, start with the quick wins in finding page-two keywords in Search Console. For local businesses, map rankings feed into these answers too; see how geo-grid rank tracking works.
Step 6: Measure whether it is working
Do this monthly: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the five questions your best customers would ask, from a clean session, and note whether you appear, how you are described and which sources are cited. Watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in Google Analytics too; those visitors tend to arrive ready to act.
ARIQ's AI visibility checks run these questions for you across assistants and keep a history, so you can see whether you are mentioned more often over time and which competitors appear instead. It sits alongside rank tracking and Search Console data in one client report. Try it free.
Key takeaways
- Nobody can guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation; you can make yourself easy to find and trust.
- Allow AI search crawlers, and submit your site to Bing as well as Google.
- Describe your business plainly and consistently everywhere.
- Answer real customer questions directly, with specifics.
- Earn mentions on review sites and publications the assistants already read.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Not in the regular answers. Recommendations in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are based on what the tools find and trust. Any ad placements are labelled separately.
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. Crawlable, fast, well-structured pages that rank well are the base. AI search adds extra weight on plain descriptions, direct answers to questions and mentions on other trusted sites.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
Live search features can pick up changes within days or weeks once pages are crawled. Mentions that rely on a model's training data can take much longer, because models are retrained periodically.
